The Righteous Sounds of 'Gemstones' and the Importance of a Perfect Score

  • Variety
The Righteous Sounds of 'Gemstones' and the Importance of a Perfect Score

Beyond the misdeeds and greed of the beloved televangelist family featured on HBO's "The Righteous Gemstones," one of the most marked elements of its co-creators' rude, enlightened and hilarious series is its music.

As with every other series creator-writer-actor Danny McBride has co-concocted — including 2009's "Eastbound & Down" and 2016's "Vice Principals" — the unique musical tone of "The Righteous Gemstones" comes down to the longtime friendship of college buddies McBride, composer Joseph Stephens and music supervisor Devoe Yates.

Where the musical mix of "Gemstones" is concerned, theirs is a genuinely fresh blend of new or rare sacred songs intimately tied to an equally bracing, secular Southern-fried brand of rock, blues, country and soul, to say nothing of its hot and holy original music and nuanced arrangements.

Orchestrator-composer Stephens' often-souped-up synth-wave vibe also matches the hyperactive tone of Yates' needle drops, making for a character of its own devising.

Ballots are out. Voting is open. The 2022 Emmy Awards are officially up for grabs, as networks, studios, and stars vie for TV's highest honor. With more contenders in nearly every major category, this year is poised to be a particularly tight race to join.

So let's make it a bit easier. Below, IndieWire's Marcus Jones and Ben Travers (Deputy Editor and Critic) have filled out a joint dream ballot, stocked with worthy options for voters to consider. These are critical favorites, under-the-radar gems, and personal picks that just might expand a field that tends to get stagnate.

Now, before anyone takes their complaints to Twitter — "Where's 'Succession'?" "What about 'Ted Lasso'"? — last year's top winners were taken off the table in order to include more space for unproven programs and performers. How 'Abbott Elementary' and 'The Righteous Gemstones' Use the Camera to Let Us in on the Joke

How 'Abbott Elementary' and 'The Righteous Gemstones' Use the Camera to Let Us in on the Joke

There's a wonderful variety of comedies on TV. But whenever a show needs to be funny, there's an opportunity for the camera to get involved in the telling of the joke. Whether it comes down to blocking and composition, movement, or shot scale, the camera can bring out an additional layer of humor and help inform the way we laugh at a series. IndieWire spoke to directors Randall Einhorn and Jody Hill about the ways in which their work, respectively, helps creates the context for genuinely warm humor on "Abbott Elementary" and the rich ridiculousness of "The Righteous Gemstones."

Mockumentary, where the camera tries to approximate "finding" joke moments in real time through camera movements, zooms, in-camera adjusts, and interaction with the actors, is one of the more obvious models of visual comedy. But according to Einhorn, it's really a means to embed the viewer with the

'The Righteous Gemstones' Songwriter Breaks Down How 'Sassy on Sunday' Came Together

  • The Wrap
'The Righteous Gemstones' Songwriter Breaks Down How 'Sassy on Sunday' Came Together

One of the greatest elements of Danny McBride's already great hit HBO comedy "The Righteous Gemstones" is the music. The show, about a dysfunctional family of wealthy televangelists, uses original and licensed music to make everything feel real despite being an over-the-top satire, and set a particularly high bar in Season 1 with "Misbehavin,'" a hilarious take on early 60's country music that arguably serves as they show's unofficial leitmotif.

But Season 2 surpassed that achievement twice, first with the original song "Sassy on Sunday," and in the season finale with an absolutely incredible cover of country legend Don Williams' 1977 song "Some Broken Hearts Never End."

That's thanks in large part to Joseph Stephens, the show's songwriter and composer. Following the end of Season 2, we were lucky enough to talk to him, and he walked us through the creation of these classic moments, explaining just how much

Danny McBride ('The Righteous Gemstones') reveals how he cast Edi Patterson and Walton Goggins on the comedy [Exclusive Video Interview]

Right from the beginning of creating "The Righteous Gemstones," Danny McBride knew that he wanted Edi Patterson to be a part of it before casting her as Judy. "I first worked with her on 'Vice Principals' and just had an absolute blast with her. It was just someone who no matter what they say just makes me laugh and their sensibilities run similar to what I like," he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). When he first came up with the idea for the show, it was originally going to center on a minister and his wife, which Patterson would play, but he didn't feel like it allowed her to go as far comedically as he wanted. "I wanted to find something that she could sort of go nuts on and so the idea of us being siblings just started making

'The Righteous Gemstones': Danny McBride Teases Season 3 — and Explains Why He Rewrote Season 2

Danny McBride and the "Righteous Gemstones" writers' room began shaping Season 2 of the HBO megachurch comedy in the fall of 2019. They started shooting in March 2020, but after two days, the Covid-19 pandemic halted production. What started as a weeks-long delay soon turned into almost a year, and McBride — stuck in lockdown — couldn't help himself but tweak what he had. And so he rewrote the entire season.

"I ended up pulling out whole storylines and characters that didn't make it into the season," McBride tells Variety's Awards Circuit podcast. "There are things I'll probably push maybe into [the third] season, but with a little bit of perspective and a little bit of […] rest in between seasons, it just helped me sort of solidify what I really wanted to do with this season."

McBride says one of the plot lines that changed the most post-rewrite was Eli Gemstone
